About the Festival

The Maesbury Canal Festival Committee is non profit making and was formed in 2007 to organise the Maesbury Festival as part of Monty 08 which was the Inland Waterways Association’s (IWA) national campaign rally for the year. Following the success of Monty 08 it was decided to make the festival at Maesbury a biennial event in order to:

  • Maintain the profile of the Montgomery Canal and its heritage to help promote the long sustainable restoration of the canal
  • Create a biennial art and craft fair with sales stalls, demonstrations and the opportunity for the public to try a new activity
  • Encourage boaters and tourists to visit (and revisit) the canal and its surrounding attractions and learn or become interested in a new craft
  • Involve the local community and encourage their on going interest in the canal and its restoration
  • Advertise and promote recruitment to local clubs and societies which in turn provide a voluntary service to schools and youth groups which extends participation out into the wider community

Maesbury '10 is underwritten by the Shropshire Union Canal Society and organised by the Maesbury Canal Festival Committee that is made up of members of the Inland Waterways Association, Friends of the Montgomery Canal and the Shropshire Union Canal Society, plus other local community volunteers.  All profits made by Maesbury '10 will be donated to the Barrow of Boulders Appeal to help pay for materials for the current restoration project between Redwith Bridge and Prices Bridge.  All money donated to this appeal is spent on the materials that will form the lining of this section of the canal, with the minor administration costs covered by the Shropshire Union Canal Society.
