Saturn to be Horse Drawn at the Festival

along the New Section of Canal

On the Sunday morning at 11.00 am, Saturn will be horse drawn by 'Bilbo' along the new section of the Montgomery Canal between Gronwen and Redwith Bridge, starting at Crofts Mill Lift Bridge.  This will be a milestone for this section which is normally shut-off to navigation to enable the new plant life to establish and due to there being no winding hole at the end by Redwith Bridge.  Saturn will then be reversed back to Gronwen and re-moored as an exhibit at the festival.  During the afternoon, the horse will be at the festival site and Sue Day will provide harnessing demonstrations.

This will be a unique sight and a great photo opportunity so make sure that you are at the festival on the Sunday morning.

Lockwind at New Marton Locks

During the weekend of the 21st and 22nd August, the Friends of the Montgomery Canal held a Lockwind at New Marton Locks in aid of funds to help support Maesbury '10.  It was a busy weekend helping boaters through the locks, particularly those on holiday where this was their first ever lock!  We all remember our first lock and they seemed very grateful for the help and guidance.  Homemade cakes, jams, homegrown produce, used books and festival merchandaise were all sold which helped raise both funds and awareness of the restoration effort on the Montgomery Canal.  Thank you to all the helpers that attended and a particular thanks goes to those who made cakes and jams to sell.

The stall was visited by boaters, walkers and as you can see in the picture below, two horses who enjoyed a break and some fresh apples!

Art Competition Entries Exhibited at Oswestry Library

The Maesbury ’10 Canal Festival Art Competition entries are now being displayed in Oswestry Library for the month of August prior to the Festival on the 4th and 5th September.

The artwork, consisting of drawings, paintings and photographs, has been entered by both children and adults, with this festival’s theme being the wild and wonderful nature of the Montgomery Canal. Please come and visit the exhibition in the library and cast your vote for the favourite in each age group. Many entrants have offered their work for sale with the proceeds going towards the restoration of the Montgomery Canal. Forms will be available for visitors to place sealed bids for those items being offered for sale. The voting will continue during the festival being held at Canal Central in Maesbury Marsh with winners being announced on the Sunday afternoon.

We are grateful to all those who have entered and a particular thanks to Maesbury Primary School.

The barrow to be raffled is a two-thirds scale version that is planted out with various bedding plants in a removeable fibreglass liner.  The actual barrow to be raffled is shown below.

Raffle tickets will be available throughout the festival and the raffle will be drawn on Sunday afternoon.  Make sure that you don't miss out on winning this which will be a great talking point in your garden.
